Cycling Art: Nude Cyclist by Joop Moesman

Joop Moesman (1909 – 1988) was a Dutch artist; a painter of surrealistic art.

When the Rijksuseum (Amsterdam’s ‘National Gallery’) held a competition to find the most beautiful Dutch nude paintings, Moesman’s painting of a nude female cyclist finished 3rd.

Obviously, we feel it should have finished 1st.

We’ve been looking on the web to find further cycling art – preferably Irish. We can’t seem to find much though. Perhaps you, our readers can help us? Do you know an Irish artist who was into cycling? The paintings don’t have to be nude, of course. We’d love to hear from you.

Today, Dublin is experiencing a heat wave. It’s a blessing; a warm good-bye kiss by a fairly cool summer.

The folks at bear, a company selling Dutch bicycles and delivery bicycles in Dublin, spent the day cycling their delivery bike through Dublin.

Philip, one of the company’s owners, sent us this picture. He was cycling with bare feet, bare legs, and bare arms along Sandymount Strand. Thanks for sharing, Philip!

The World Naked Bike Ride vs. Bare Cycling Club

Quite a few of our members have heard about it: the World Naked Bike Ride. The World Naked Bike Ride is a global event, aimed at getting attention for non-cycling friendly environments and for the environmental threats our world faces.

To be clear: the Bare Cycling Club is quite different. Our goals are modest: we just want cycling to be a bit more enjoyable, by wearing less. We also don’t require nakedness; shorts and short shirts are fine.

That being said: we do support the World Naked Bike Ride. And we think some of their pictures are extremely cool. Like this one:

Bare Cycling Club – small Sunday Trip

In spite of Hurricane Katia’s tail hitting the Irish coast last Sunday, cyclists flocked to Dublin city centre to join in the Dublin Sky Ride (www.goskyride.com/dublin).

Not our Bare Cycling Club Members, though.

They decided to go on their own, alternative ride, along Dublin’s coast-line. Not because they oppose the SkyRide in itself (we think it’s a great thing that 8500 people show up to enjoy cycling). But because they don’t enjoy the helmets, the bibs, and the high-vis klack bands that are handed out for free.

They would rather ride bare headed. Like Eoin is doing in this picture, taken near Blackrock park.

Ah.. the liberty of it all.

One of our members, cycling near Dolphin's Barn

One of our new members went out this Wednesday evening near Dolphin’s Barn, for a quick Bra Bike Ride. We admire her courage, and we are thankful for the picture!
However, please do bear in mind we are a ‘bare cycling community’, not a ‘naked cycling community’.

After careful internal discussions, we decided this picture does not cross the line, and we are therefore publishing it on our website.
But beware; the picture is close to the line.

Thanks for sharing though, and for drawing attention to our cause!
